Peter Cook as the Devil, Raquel Welch as “Lust” and Dudley Moore caught in the middle as the depressed and initially suicidal Stanley Moon. 1967′s “Bedazzled” is an entertaining, existential, not to mention quintessential, far-out British comedy from the fertile minds of it’s stars.

Directed and produced by Stanley Donen and written by the two stars, Moore & Cook, “Bedazzled” comically retells the Faust legend. Dudley and Peter first teamed together on Moore’s BBC series, Not Only… But Also in 1965. Their partnership lasted well into the 1970′s but unfortunately “Bedazzled” was their only feature film together. Enjoy.

When Sir Charles Baskerville dies unexpectedly his nephew and heir Sir Henry returns from South Africa. Dr. Mortimer. the local doctor is concerned about Sir Henrys safety as he is convinced that Sir Charles was literally frightened to death.

Here’s an unappreciated, clever little bank heist comedy you may remember from 1990. Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid team up in a well-conceived yet star-crossed bank robbery and get-away. Murray is at his smarmy best leading the trio in their attempt to escape the muck and mire of New York City. Jason Robards is perfectly cast as the lead detective. Look for well-played, early career appearances from Tony Shalhoub as the Middle-Eastern cab driver and Stanley Tucci as a mob-underling. The always hilarious dry delivery of comedy legend Bob Elliot is on display as the bank security guard. And the late, great Phil Hartman also has a bit part.

This still relevant satire stars Dorothy McGowan as supermodel Polly Maggoo. She’s being followed by a French television crew who is filming an insipid TV news documentary series called “Qui êtes-vous?”. I guess some things never change, they just get worse. “Who Are You, Polly Magoo?” also stars Grayson Hall as Miss Maxwell, a fashion magazine editor modeled after Diana Vreeland, and Philippe Noiret as the TV reporter and director. Also appearing in the film are Jean Rochefort, Sami Frey and Alice Sapritch.

Highly recommended, and you can watch it here…

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a 1967 American drama film starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn, and featuring Hepburn’s niece Katharine Houghton. The film contains a positive representation of the controversial subject of interracial marriage, which historically had been illegal in most states of the United States, and was still illegal in 17 states, mostly Southern states, up until June 12 of the year of the film’s release, when anti-miscegenation laws were struck down by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia. The film was produced and directed by Stanley Kramer and written by William Rose. The movie’s Oscar-nominated score was composed by Frank DeVol.

A fascinating, little behind the scenes look at one of the greatest horror films ever made. Stanley Kubrick’s daughter Vivian filmed this 35 minute gem with, appropriately enough, a 35mm camera. Vivian focuses not so much on her celebrated father’s process, but his effect on the people under his command. You’ll see Jack Nicholson’s brilliance as an actor and Shelley Duvall’s tenacity. But I particularly liked the very brief but memorable interviews of Danny LLoyd and Scatman Crothers. Danny’s attitude is so innocent and refreshing compared to what we see just 30 years later. And Scatman Crothers, well, his interview lasts all of 36 seconds and it’s one of the most touching and genuine 36 seconds I’ve ever seen. Give this a watch, not so much as an insight to Kubrick or his classic film, but as a reminder that once upon a time people seemed to be human beings.
